What is Taekwon-Do?

"Taekwon-Do is a martial art to be used only for self defence and only in the cause of justice. The history of Korea contains not a single sample of its military forces being employed for the invasion of its neighbors or for any other purpose except national defence."

Taekwon-Do has grown in popularity since its inception and is now taught in nearly every country in the world. It is most famous for its spectacular and dynamic kicking techniques, although this has led to the misconception that Taekwon-Do is just a kicking art.

Taekwon-Do does indeed make extensive use of the legs, since the legs are longer and more powerful than the arms, but kicks make up only a small fraction of the total number of Taekwon-Do techniques. There are also blocks, punches and strikes with the hands or arms as well as basic throws and grappling.

The wide range of techniques caters for all types of situations, and students are taught to defend against single and multiple opponents, on foot, seated and prone, and against weapons such as sticks and knives.

Junior TKD

Our children's class for 8-10 years is an ideal introduction to Taekwon-Do and the Martial Arts. Your child will be guided through our progressive syllabus step by step, learning the first basic steps in Taekwon-Do so as to gradually build their confidence and abilities.

Our junior class is designed to increase levels of focus and concentration by setting challenging and achievable tasks whilst giving the children the support they require to see tangible progress.

As well as learning to kick and punch safely in a controlled environment, your child will benefit from our professional attitude and positive role models. The children will learn some very simple and age appropriate self-defence moves that can help them in almost every situation as well as learning about self-discipline so as to ensure they never abuse the skills they are learning. Martial arts training can be an essential part of your child's development, helping to prepare them for real life both physically and mentally.

Our kids classes run in line with School terms and our Teens/Adult classes continue throughout the year with just a short break over the Christmas period.

Cadet TKD

Our Cadets Taekwon-Do is a step up from our kids class in its intensity and the way it is taught. Specifically designed to challenge Children and Teenagers of this age range our Cadets class ensures the students give a higher level of focus in every session. Learning more details in the techniques being taught and then also learning more complex kicks.

The cadets will begin their journey on muscle and strength development here as well as creating the dynamism for the fast kicks that Taekwon-Do is so famous for.

As well as learning self-defence moves appropriate for their age range the students will learn the technical moves required to reach each level progressively. This is all taught with motivation in a way that the students can benefit from our professional attitude and positive role models.

Adult TKD

Our Adults class is ideal for those who are over 14 years old up to and including adults, we have many professionals training with us including parents of children who train in our earlier classes.

We have found that those in full time employment find TKD a really good release of energy and a focus that helps them to goal set, be it for weight loss, to make friendship, to learn a self-defence or to even set becoming a black belt as their ultimate intention.

Additional info

Our students will also have the opportunity to take part in our seminars and competitions with some even able to compete at national and international level.

All our instructors are DBS checked (police checked) and must qualify through an extensive UK Sport recognised Taekwon-Do specific instructor program. We are members of the BTC (British Taekwondo Council) and is the only group that is recognised and supported by the NSPCC.

There are gradings once every three to four months and students will be selected to take part in the grading if they have attended enough classes and can demonstrate the ability required to take the grading.

Starting out
All students begin with a 4 week trial where they have the opportunity to see what TKD is about with a variety of classes, after the trial the instructor when then spend some time talking to you about continuing afterwards. When first starting Taekwon-Do you just need to wear track suit bottoms and a T shirt and bring a bottle of water along to keep hydrated.
